LO1: Special effects generating and enhancing content

Special effects are used in film to improve the visuals of the movie and enhance the viewer experience. It does this by immersing the audience in the movie by making everything feel real- the effects help to bring to life a scene/story/characters that wouldn't be possible to create otherwise. For example...

1) Digital Composting: this is when, after all the effects have been created, all the elements of CGI and live action are combined to create the final product. Marvel movies such as Ant-man Quantumania use this often due to their heavy use of varying effects combined with practical footage to create a refined finished product that looks fantastical and other-worldly.

2) Green & Blue screens: These are used in most productions to create a background that can easily be replaced with an image or video. These blanc backgrounds during filming are an unnatural shade of green and blue that song often appear in average shots so that, when chroma-keyed out later, the practical subject isn't also replaced by the image background.

Here is an example used in Alice In Wonderland:

3) Chroma Key; is what makes green/blue screens work. The specific colour is selected and removed and replaced from the shot with CGI or a background image. This was used in my Alice in Wonderland example to transform the scene entirely to make it seem as if the actress was within this fantasy world.

4) CGI: Computer generated Images (CGI) is a created, moving or stilled, animated image. This is composited into a scene to create an effective visual effect as part of a final product. In this example CGI is used in War For The Planet of the Apes to transform the actor into an ape using CGI applied to Serkis' face.

5) Mattes: These are used in film to create solid colour blocks to cover an area that are/arent covered and effected by VFX.

6) Morphing: Transition of a shape into another seamlessly

7) Rotoscoping: This is drawing an animation frame by frame to create realistic, human-like movement.

8) 3D Graphic: This is a three dimensional graphic used in digital editing so that animators can turn objects in post production to get multiple different angles instead of having to create a separate shape of a different angle.
